Second edition, corrected and enlarged by the Author's own hand. To which is prefixed his Life, written by himself. ALSO: Appendix in Historiam Ecclesiae Cathedralis S. Pauli; Diversa, Ad majorem istius operis illustrationem continens. AND: A Brief Historical Account of the Cathedrals of York, Durham and Carlisle; as also the principal collegiate churches in the Province of York. Extracted from authentic records, and other authorities (Bowyer, London, 1715). Folio. xxiii, 210pp, 11 plates (9 folding), 29 full-page engravings by W. Hollar and J. Harris / 76pp (last blank) / 88pp / pp (Index), pp (list of subscribers), pp (errata/directions to binder). Misnumbering of pages has 51/52 repeated and 117/118 omitted, but no pages missing. Contemporary full calf, spine decorated in gilt with raised bands, gilt rules on the boards. The spine is dulled and has classification number written at the foot, extremities slightly rubbed, upper joint cracked above and below the top and bottom raised band, but binding solid, slight surface wear to the leather, but in very good condition. Bookplates on front paste-down (Ex Libris / SSM Kelham, with classification number written on the plate) and fep (Frances Louisa Swayne). The title-page heavily browned and brittle around the margins, the following leaf less so, some scattered foxing and offsetting throughout, but generally clean and in good condition. The directions to the binder refer to 12 plates but only 11 are present and (despite a bookseller's annotation referring to 12) there is no sign that the other was ever present. A very good copy. From the library of Kelham Hall, Nottinghamshire, which was used in the 20th century by The Monks of the Society of the Sacred Mission as a theological training centre.
